More than one-third of our American Presidents have confirmed Ulster-Scots ancestry; in fact, the parents of three Presidents were born in Ulster.


Andrew Jackson
      Our 7th President.  His parents came from County Antrim.  He was born in a mostly Ulster-Scots area of Waxshaws, South Carolina.

James Knox Polk
      Our 11th President.  His ancestors were from Coleraine, and emigrated to America in 1680.  The Polk family became a powerful political force in North Carolina and Tennessee.  "My Ulster blood is a priceless heritage".

James Buchanan
      Our 15th President.  His family emigrated to America from County Tyrone.

Andrew Johnson
      Our 17th  President.  His grandfather left County Antrim around 1750.

Ulysses Simpson Grant
      Our 18th President. His great-grandfather came to America from County Tyrone.

Chester Alan Arthur
      Our 21st President.  His Presidency began a 25-year span in which the White House was occupied by Presidents of Ulster-Scots descent.  His family came from County Antrim.

Grover Cleveland
      Our 22nd and 24th President.  His grandfather emigrated County Antrim in the 1790's.

Benjamin Harrison
      Our 23rd President.  His maternal line was Ulster-Scots.

William McKinley
      Our 25th President.  His ancestors came from County Antrim.

Theodore Roosevelt
      Our 26th President.  His mother's family came from County Antrim.  

Woodrow Wilson
      Our 28th President.  His grandfather was a printer from County Tyrone.
